More Power:
While we are not here to promote anything except for Jesus and the full gospel - the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous said "Our whole problem seemed to be a lack of power" and Dr Bob A.A. Cofounder said "Our experience amounted to little. We got the program through the study of scripture." They found the power they needed to overcome their problem with alcohol and live happy and productive lives through God's word and by entering into relationship with Him. Of course as wonderful as all of that was all that they really knew was a "half" gospel and they didn't experience all of the benefits of the full gospel. The same thing is true today as most Christians have only been taught a half gospel and even worse, in most cases, a lot of legalism which is about performing or trying to earn God's love instead of receiving it as a free gift which is the only way it can be received. It is the truth which gives us freedom and power. It is also our "natural" disposition and the way of the world to have a works mindset. Looking back I realize although quite a bit of my early instruction was legalistic most of the performance based thinking I had and the guilt I felt for not being able to measure up as I would have liked to originated from my own thinking much more so than even what I had been taught with regard to most issues.
The full "gospel" ("gospel" means "good news") refers to the fact that while there is nothing that is more important than the forgiveness of sins that is really only a "half gospel" Some people also preach works or legalism and call that the gospel when it is really just the opposite..Jesus paid for us to have all of our needs met in every area and to have an abundant life. Although that is clear from scripture and evidenced in the lives of Christians who understand and operate in those truths, most Christians have not been taught those truths and do not understand them in a significant way. Most believe that we have to earn everything instead of understanding that all we have to do to receive those things is receive those things by faith and operate in principles of faith placing our trust in God. God leads us to do any work that may be involved.
Of course most things do involve a process, but we will start seeing positive results and we will begin receiving more from God the moment we begin operating in faith, not after we have gotten rid of all of our bad habits. But God honors our faith starting with where we are at. Then as we grow in our faith our behaviors start changing also. As they say it's the "Inside job instead of trying to work from the outside in."
